This year’s COP30 marks the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement, and will be chaired by André Corrêa do Lago, a Brazilian diplomat renowned for his expertise in climate and environmental diplomacy. The choice of Belém, symbolic because of its direct link with Amazonia, is a reminder of the importance of this region to the global climate balance.

This major event will bring together between 60,000 and 75,000 participants, including representatives of the 195 member countries of the UNFCCC, NGOs, businesses, international organisations and indigenous peoples, who will play a central role in the discussions.

According to Marina Silva, Brazil’s Minister for the Environment and Climate Change, COP30 will be built around four pillars: a meeting of government leaders, negotiations, a programme of action and commitment, and collective mobilisation. The conference will focus on adaptation, the central theme of this year’s event, according to its chairman. Other issues to be addressed include the review of Nationally Determined Contributions (“NDCs”), climate financing, climate justice, the energy transition and the preservation of ecosystems.

COP30 will be a decisive stage in redefining the world’s climate ambitions and strengthening collective action.
