Sustainable Habitats in Africa

eMag #2: How can the Yaoundé Roadmap for Sustainable Habitats in Africa be accelerated?

While African cities will be home to two-thirds of the continent’s population by 2050, the development of African urban areas to meet this increase is not sufficiently planned or organised. Providing the necessary infrastructure and urban services remains a major issue, and the lack of it can result in informal housing. Between 1990 and 2015, 90% of the housing growth was informal and unplanned, with poor access to water and energy, increased pollution and public health problems. These areas are also more vulnerable to climate risks.

To address this major issue, the Yaoundé Roadmap on Sustainable Habitats was adopted at the Climate Chance Conference Africa 2023 in Yaoundé by networks of international and African non-state actors. Despite this development, a number of steps are still needed to put the Roadmap’s recommendations into practice.

What are these steps? How can the Yaoundé Roadmap be used to speed up the move towards sustainable habitat in Africa?

This eMag aims to provide an update on the Yaoundé Roadmap since its adoption, to identify the next steps, especially six months ahead of the 12th World Urban Forum in Cairo, and to suggest ways in which the various actors can work together to facilitate its implementation.

On this occasion, the updated diagnostic note of the Observatory of Climate Action in Africa, Sustainable habitat and climate change in Africa, will be presented.
