COP14 • Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS)

Samarkand, Uzbekistan

Climate Chance is taking part in COP14, the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CEM), held from February 12 to 17 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

A few words from Ronan Dantec, President of the Association Climate Chance

“We cannot preserve Africa’s great fauna without enhancing connectivity, and we cannot preserve corridors without resolutely acting to benefit local communities’ development.”

Discover the association’s highlights and its program for the week, focusing on the challenges and opportunities of ecological corridors.

This is an opportunity to officialise the launch of the Global Partnership for Ecological Connectivity, spearheaded by the CEM and in collaboration with a large number of international conservation organisations: Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), ICLEI, WWF… and of which the International Biodiversity Coalition on Corridors in Africa is a founding partner. This global initiative is a response to the fragmentation, degradation and destruction of natural habitats for migratory species.

Side-event on 13/02 “Ecological corridors: Challenges and opportunities for development”.

The coalition organized a side event, « Ecological Corridors: Development Challenges and Opportunities », featuring Amy Fraenkel, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Migratory Species (CEM) and Gary Tabor, Executive Director, Center for Large Landscape Conservation (CLLC) and IUCN CMAP Connectivity Conservation Specialist Group.

Climate Chance presented the progress made by the International Biodiversity Coalition on Corridors in Africa, underlining the importance of ecological connectivity for wildlife biodiversity, human/animal cohabitation for the development of local communities, and the search for new financing mechanisms in Africa.
