Support for Farmers’ Marketing and Agricultural Development Project

Centre d'Actions pour la Sécurité Alimentaire et le Développement Durable / Action Centre for the Food Security and Sustainability (CASAD-Bénin) aims to improve rice farmers' resilience to climatic hazards.

An initiative of Centre d'Actions pour la Sécurité Alimentaire et le Développement Durable (CASAD-Bénin)

Overview of the project

In 2016, as part of its mission to build farmers’ capacities through the Support for Farmers’ Agricultural Marketing and Development Project (PAACoDA – Projet d’Appui aux Agriculteurs pour la commercialisation et le Développement Agricole), the NGO CASAD-Benin, in collaboration with the NGO New-land, introduced the “Permanent Water Lowland” (BEP – Bas-fond à Eau Permanente) initiative, a climate-smart farming practice.

Rice paddies are created fed from dykes and embankments used to retain and control the movement of sufficient water for rice cultivation. Inside the compartments is a rice plant (Variety IR841), transplanted at the latest fifteen days after sowing in the nursery and spaced at 25 cm by 25 cm.
