Protecting the honey bee (Saharan region)

This inspiring ongoing apiculture initiative was implemented by the Moroccan association Albisher.

Overview of the project

The main objectives of this project are:
  • To offer trainings on apiculture to local villagers
  • To raise awareness on this highly endangered species, the honey bee
  • To develop queen bee breeding by selecting the native breeds.

Protecting the endangered sepcies from extinction in the Skoura region of Morrocco.

Ongoing research

Quantitative results
Develpoing family apiculture. Over 300 beehives have been distributed.
Qualitative results
There is a correct success rate (approx. 35%) taking into account the desertification phenomenon  and lack grazing land in the region.
Financing

Phase1 funded by the "Fondation de France" + "Office Agricole". Phase 2 is seeking funding.

Based at the Centre Agricole Skoura Ouarzazate in Morocco, this association specialised in development and environment, Albisher, was formed in December 2006. The aim has been to spur the population's development (in particulier women's) through ancestral activities including revisited version of Apiculture that have appropriated modern tools.t Since 2006, the association ALBISHER  has developed acitivities in the following sectors:
