Strengthening the Women’s Horticultural Cooperative

To provide a support, training and awareness-raising service for the organization and management of herders', farmers', fishermen's and craftsmen's organisations.

An initiative of ONG Agir en Faveur de l'Environnement (ONG AFE)

Overview of the project

Women make up the majority of the region’s population, due to the rural exodus of young people and men of working age. Women are especially vulnerable to food insecurity because of their lower social and economic status, and the fact that they have greater difficulty than men in gaining access to resources such as land, credit, equipment and services that foster productivity. Women’s limited access to resources and insufficient purchasing power further complicate food production and supply, directly affecting the food security of families (women, men, children) and the region’s overall economic development. The women of Djonaba are often grouped together in poorly organized cooperatives, and the lack of resources and qualified training means that the actions implemented are limited and not very productive.

Objective

In this situation of food insecurity, a comprehensive project has been identified by our local partner, NGO AFE, in coordination with the commune of Djonaba and the women's cooperatives. This project aims to contribute to improving food security for the population of Djonaba, Seïf el Wad cooperative, through complementary activities designed to: - Improve the cooperative's horticultural production through a process of institutional and technical strengthening; equipping the cooperative with appropriate horticultural tools and equipment; mastering marketing techniques. - Improve the cooperative's irrigation water management by upgrading its collection and distribution infrastructure, thereby facilitating and saving the work involved in mobilizing water to the horticultural plots. The immediate results of this action will be an increase in production areas and a more sustainable use of resources.

Project timeline

15 May 2022 - 30 August 2023

Quantitative results

1- Increase of at least 30% in the cooperative’s horticultural production by the end of the project.
2- 80% of the cooperative’s women attend training sessions regularly.
3- A water collection and distribution system for irrigation is operational by the end of the project.
4- 80% of women in the cooperative are familiar with rational water management techniques and are using the facilities sustainably by the end of the project.
5- Organisation chart and distribution of functions defined within the cooperative.
6- Women plan their activities
7- Women meet regularly to make decisions
8- 80% of women trained in management buying and selling techniques.

Qualitative results

The direct beneficiary population: 30 women farmers (women only) who are members of the Seïf El Wad women’s cooperative in the commune of Djonaba. Of these women, 5 will be trained in management, 30 in participation and organisation, 30 in irrigation techniques and rational water use, 12 in basic management and 30 in cultivation techniques. In this way, the group of women members of the cooperative will be part of a process of learning marketing techniques that will enable them to improve their level of income through the sale of surpluses. Indirect beneficiaries: the general population of the district where the well is located (around 250 people), as well as the population of the commune in general (11,600 people), who will see their food security improve.
