Electromobility and local sectors
Pitch
Faced with the challenges of climate change, energy dependence, rapid urban growth and increasing mobility needs, electromobility is emerging as a promising solution for African cities. However, beyond the introduction of electric vehicles, a fundamental question arises regarding the development of a local industrial and economic ecosystem capable of generating jobs, fostering innovation and strengthening the technological sovereignty of African countries.
The transition to electromobility cannot be limited to importing vehicles and equipment. It requires the development of local value chains encompassing vehicle production and assembly, charging infrastructure, battery manufacturing or recycling, maintenance, digital services, skills development and investment financing.
However, several challenges remain: high equipment costs, inadequate electricity infrastructure, the absence of appropriate regulatory frameworks, insufficient local industrial capacity, dependence on imports and difficulties in accessing financing.
How can African countries turn electromobility into a driver of economic and industrial transformation by developing competitive, resilient and value-creating local industries, while meeting the requirements of the energy transition and sustainable mobility?
To what extent can electromobility serve African countries not only as a response to the challenges of transport decarbonization, but also as a catalyst for industrial development, innovation and job creation through the development of integrated and sustainable local value chains?
