International Conference on Sustainable Mobility and Climate 2026

How can intercity, peri-urban and urban transport systems be better integrated?

Description

Urbanization in Africa is the fastest in the world. It is often characterized by urban sprawl that is disconnected from mass transit networks. The World Bank has established that, on average, whenever the urban population doubles, the built-up area triples. This results in a significant downward trend in average population densities, thereby reducing the potential to develop efficient and energy-efficient public transport systems. The burden is twofold for the increasingly numerous populations living in peripheral areas: prohibitive transport costs and excessive travel times, whose impact on the climate could also be considerable.

Poorly documented, peri-urbanization in cities of the Global South is most often addressed through the mobility challenges posed by urban sprawl. Once this situation has been established, what solutions can we envisage in response? This is the focus of the discussions in this session.
