Logistics and sustainable trade: decarbonisation and adaptation
Description
Intra-African trade still accounts for only 15 to 18% of the continent’s total trade, compared to over 60% in Europe and 55% in Asia. This underdevelopment is largely attributable to logistical barriers: high transportation costs, inadequate infrastructure, complex customs procedures, and the lack of efficient multimodal transport corridors. The AfCFTA notes that logistics inefficiencies account for up to 35% of the cost of goods in some landlocked countries in West and Central Africa, constituting a major barrier to competitiveness. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) aims to double intra-African trade by 2035, which will require massive investment in transport corridors. The Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA) Priority Action Plan (PIDA-PAP2, 2021–2030) supports the development of regional connectivity and has identified a series of priority regional corridors linking road, rail, river, and maritime transport modes.
Eleven strategic corridors aligned with the PIDA PAP 2 have been identified for an enhanced and greener EU-Africa connectivity.
The EU International Business Forum on Transport and Strategic Corridors, to be held in Abidjan from 30 March to 1 April 2026, aims to boost investment in the transport sector, in line with the European Union’s Global Gateway strategy and the priorities of the Abidjan–Lagos and Abidjan–Ouagadougou (CALAO) CALAO corridor countries.
The objective of this workshop is to extend the business forum and enrich the gateway approach on climate change adaptation objectives, also including ecological corridors and the impact of logistics on industries engaged in decarbonization.
