International Conference on Sustainable Mobility and Climate 2026

Which Energy Sources for Which Transition? What Role for Renewable Energy?

Pitch

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the transportation sector accounts for approximately 23% of global energy-related CO₂ emissions, and demand for mobility is expected to rise sharply in African cities over the coming decades. With the continent’s urban population projected to double by 2050, the transition to sustainable transportation systems is becoming a major challenge for climate action and urban development.

Today, 98% of mobility on the African continent remains dominated by imported hydrocarbons, representing a cost of $120 billion per year and significant vulnerability to fluctuations in oil markets.

Vehicle electrification, the development of clean public transportation, and the emergence of alternative fuels are opening new avenues for reducing the sector’s emissions while meeting mobility demands. However, these transformations will only be truly effective if they rely on low-carbon energy sources, particularly renewable energy and are part of a broader vision for the development of renewable energy..

The objective of the workshop is:

  • To identify opportunities and barriers to the development of electric mobility
  • To understand how renewable energy can be integrated into transportation systems to power the mobility of tomorrow while ensuring accessible, reliable, and sustainable energy solutions for African cities
  • To explore how Nationally determined contributions (NDCs) promote the development of sustainable mobility
  • To discuss how to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy
