Overview of the project

Air pollution is a major problem for both public health and climate change. In Côte d’Ivoire in particular, improving air quality is hampered by a lack of available data. The aim of this project is to provide Abidjan with a modern infrastructure for monitoring its air quality, in order to accelerate not only awareness, but also the commitment of private and public citizens, in terms of actions, measures and legislation, in the fight against air pollution. In concrete terms, the project involves deploying a network of air quality sensors across the city of Abidjan, to develop a map of air pollution in the city. Data354 is capable of managing the collection of data from the sensors, analysing it and disseminating it openly in real time via a dedicated platform to the various players involved: politicians and legislators, businesses, non-governmental organisations and, of course, citizens.

Objective

Collecting and making available reliable data on air quality in Abidjan.

Quantitative results

We now have two air quality sensors calibrated to detect PM2.5, PM10, CO, NO2 and O3, which we have deployed in Abidjan. They are also located close to each other to try and estimate the impact of asphalting a road. We have designed a website dedicated to the project, as well as an online data visualisation platform accessible to all.

Qualitative results

Today, we have forged relationships and partnerships with a number of players who are enabling the project to develop: a quality sensor supplier who serves as our technical partner, and members of departments linked to the Côte d’Ivoire Ministries of the Environment and Health. The project is generating a lot of interest locally and we are continuing to present it to different types of organisation. Around ten people use our visualisation platform every day.

Financing

Until now, this project has been financed from our own funds. We are looking for additional sources of funding for the rest of the project.
