Democratization of the Dniester River Basin Management

Overview of the project
NGOs from various parts of the Dniester River basin have joined forces to promote the democratization of the Dniester River basin’s management and to become effective agents of changes in the field of water management. They drafted the first version of an agreement on the protection of the transboundary Dniester River and began lobbying for its adoption. The initiative was supported by international donors. NGOs actively participated in the development and lobbying the adoption of the Treaty between the Government of the Republic of Moldova and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, which was signed in Rome on 2012. Now representatives of NGOs Black Sea Women’s Club and International Association of Dniester River Keepers “ECO-TIRAS” are official members of the Dniester Commission) and actively promote their projects and initiatives.
In order to solve environmental and climate problems in the Dniester River basin, non-governmental organizations have established an Initiative and realized set of projects to democratize water management in the transboundary Dniester River basin with the involvement of local communities, local authorities, and non-governmental organizations

Representatives of BSWC are actively participating in all meetings of the Dniester Commission. For the last 6th meeting of the Dniester Commission BSWC prepared the Regulations on the basin-wide art contest “Colours of the Dniester” for it adoption by the Dniester Commission. The contest, which was uninterruptedly organized by the NGOs since 2008, has been engaging a broad audience from the Dniester River basin in Moldova and Ukraine and contributed to raising awareness on environmental protection and transboundary water management in the region via creative means. During these years more than 20000 participants were involved in this contest. Now the Regulations of this basin-wide art contest is adopted by the Dniester Commission.
Black Sea Women’s Club, International Association of Dniester River Keepers “ECO-TIRAS” and other NGOs play a key role in the stakeholders engagement from the all Dniester river basin. They play a leading role on the work of the different Environmental Platforms, which engage a lot of local actors into protection and sustainable development of the Dniester river basin. NGOs realise a lot of environmental projects, including the project focused on adaptation the Dniester river basin to Climate Change.
We are presenting a long-term the Dniester river NGOs community initiative. From 2026 certain activities will be carried out with the financial support of the GEF-UNDP-OSCE Project “Advancing transboundary co-operation and Integrated Water Resources Management in the Dniester River Basin through implementation of the Strategic Action Programme (SAP)”.

Conserve and sustainably use the Black Sea and it marine resources for sustainable development of the Black Sea region is the main thematic focus areas of BSWC. Coastal development, pollution, and the increasingly effects of climate change, such as sea-level rise and ocean acidification and continuing degradation of marine ecosystems are under BSWC concern.
Many activities in the Dniester river basin were implemented by Black Sea women’s Club in partnership with NGOs Women engaged for a Common Future (WECF) and International Association of Dniester River Keepers “ECO-TIRAS”.
