Solar pumping project to produce drinking water for irrigating market garden crops in 12 localities in the Chari Baguirmi region

Chad, a vast country in Central Africa covering an area of 1,284,000 km², has a population of around 18 million, 60% of whom live in rural areas.

An initiative of Union des Femmes pour la Lutte Contre la Désertification au Sahel

Overview of the project

Women and young people are particularly vulnerable because of their lack of access to resources and means of production. The country faces chronic food insecurity, linked to high illiteracy rates and rapid population growth.

Laws, customary practices and religious beliefs perpetuate traditional roles and justify inequalities between men and women. Women are often excluded from decision-making and have limited access to finance and employment.

The lack of water and capital hampers their entrepreneurial abilities. When they do work, they are paid less and confined to precarious sectors such as handicrafts and petty trading.

The project aims to improve their daily lives by facilitating access to drinking water, thus opening the way to new income-generating activities.

Objective

This project, Support to the village community for the production of drinking water by the solar pumping system for market gardening in the 12 regions of Chad 1- Promote women's entrepreneurship in rural areas through the use of renewable energy technologies. With access to renewable energy, 2- Increase women's agricultural productivity through greater use of renewable energy technologies. Provide village groups with agricultural machinery powered by renewable energy; 3- Raise awareness and educate women on the use of renewable energy to eradicate poverty at household level and, more broadly, to develop the rural sector.
