Overview of the project

Within the framework of a Climate Change Adaptation programme, IQRA partnered up with RESILLIANCE to launch an initiative based on the regeneration of the socio-economic context of rural zones in Morocco through agro-environmental regeneration (regenerative development).

The initative is taking place in Tamait Oufella in the rural commune of Amskroud on the outskirts of Agadir (< 30 kms) in Morocco.

This community is particularly vulnerable (48% vulnerability rate) and has a population of 1,091 inhabitants (283 families). There is also a high percentage of literacy at over 78% (much higher than the national average for rural zones that is around 54%).

This regenerative development initiative aims to triple the economic, social and environmental impact in order to improve living conditions in vulnerable communities such as Tamait Oufella by replenishing one’s environment.

With Resilience in mind, the impacts work together an reinforce one another. This is done by creating a value chain that makes a “win-win” relation between the urban consumer seeking organic & healthy food and a local family farmer seeking independence.

This initiative was implemented by the community of Tamait Oufella, enabling it to share investment and maximise impacts ! It takes place over three steps :

  1. The pilot phase that takes place on a smaller farming area with a limited number of families that all aim to show how sustainable the value chain is/can be
  2. An expansion phase over farming zones reaching out to a large number of families, launching transformation activities, coaching farming activities
  3. The rehabilitation phase on the area to protect it
Objective

The rural environment of Tamait Oufella is regenerated on economic and social terms thanks to environmental regeneration.

Level of progress

Qualitative results

The environment recovered and is revived thanks to the permaculture and climate-intelligent techniques. Social bonding is reinforced within population who participate in the project and governance for the project is improved.
