Overview of the project

Adote um Bairro (Adopt a Neighborhood) is a local collection and environmental education program for waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) in São Paulo. It addresses a practical challenge: many households want to dispose of their electronic devices through appropriate channels, but small-scale door-to-door collection is logistically expensive. The program enables companies to sponsor collection campaigns in a specific neighborhood. Ecobraz then organizes local outreach, collection, material identification, sorting, and directs equipment either for reuse or to an appropriate treatment stream based on its condition and the accepted scope of the operation. Each campaign generates collection records, chain-of-custody documentation, and destination records that accurately reflect the activities carried out. The model combines circular economy principles, public awareness, and local impact by diverting electronic equipment from informal disposal channels or inappropriate dumping and reintroducing recoverable materials into the productive economy. Results are communicated transparently and with appropriate limitations; an operational record or report is not presented as a certification or as an automatic guarantee of compliance.

Objective

Make WEEE collection accessible at the neighborhood level across São Paulo.

Qualitative results

The program provides a convenient local solution for residents, raises awareness of the environmental and health risks associated with WEEE, and connects corporate sponsorship with verifiable local collection operations. Collected equipment is directed toward reuse whenever technically feasible or to appropriate treatment and recycling channels. The model strengthens operational traceability through collection, chain-of-custody, and destination records, without presenting these documents as certifications or legal guarantees.

Financing

Private funding provided by corporate sponsors, according to the operations effectively contracted.
