Cities Alliance for Sustainable Development

ORU Fogar aims to bring together the regions throughout the world to identify their concerns, to work on joint proposals, and to make their voices heard.

An initiative of United Regions Organization / Forum of Regional Governments and Global Associations of Regions (ORU Fogar)

Overview of the project

According to data from the study by the Center for Sociological Research of the Government of Spain, “Spanish public opinion regarding international cooperation for development”, between 2005 and 2015 only a minority of Spaniards claimed to know or have heard of the so-called Millennium Development Goals, United Nations’s plan to reduce poverty in the world. This can, in general terms, be extrapolated to the Valencian society. The size of this millennium-conscious minority has ranged from a high of 31% in 2010 to a low of 24% in 2015.

The Cities Alliance for Sustainable Development, established by the Valencian Government, is made up of Valencian municipalities, and the Valencian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces. It responds to the government’s willingness to disseminate, and transfer at the local level the importance of committing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs,) and making them more accessible to all Valencians.

Its objective and mission is to involve the towns and cities of the Valencia region in the information, dissemination, awareness, and commitment to the SDGs, promoting the adoption of comprehensive, and participatory approaches , as well as good governance in all areas of sustainable, equitable, and inclusive development.

ORU Fogar‘s goal is to build a global governance, in which regions count and their voices are heard, and to work for the regions.

We represent the intermediate governments in all the organisations that have a direct impact on the quality of life of their populations, in a spirit of loyal cooperation with the municipal power.

In 2018, ORU Fogar won the annual Best Practices Award from the government of Catalonia (Spain): it’s aimed at promoting and encouraging good practices currently being implemented by regional governments, and that seek to improve the quality of services provided to citizens.

There are three working groups established to promote the implementation of SDGs in regions: food sovereignty, sustainable development, and development cooperation.
