Clean and Green Cities Project(PVPV)

The Network of Civil Society Organisations for the Green Economy in Central Africa (ROSCEVAC) is an implementing agency of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS).

An initiative of ROSCEVAC: the Network of Civil Society Organisations for the Green Economy in Central Africa

Overview of the project

The Clean and Green Cities Project is a project that contributes to limiting waste and landfill, limiting treatment costs, preserving the environment and complying with current regulations.

This project consists of several activities, namely:

  • Activity 1: Awareness campaign for the population on urban household waste management;
  • Activity 2: Capacity building workshop for development organisations (NGOs, ICGs, POs and associations) active in waste management. The aim will be to train them professionally, individually and collectively, in order to set up effective and sustainable actions in the field;
  • Activity 3: Selective collection, treatment and recovery of waste in order to significantly reduce the level of pollution and generate income for target groups. This will involve sorting, recovering and/or recovering plastic components and other household waste. Also, to offer composting in composting centres that will be created in the city.
  • Activity 4: Support for the creation of income-generating activities (IGAs) by young people. Through financial support in order to support private initiatives related to waste management.
Objective

The main objective of this project is to promote concerted, synergistic or complementary actions for the collection, treatment, elimination, recovery and/or recovery of household waste in the neighbourhoods of the various cities of Gabon, with a view to limiting the deterioration of the population's living environment and generating income for the most disadvantaged.

Quantitative results

During the first activity of the Clean and Green Cities Project (CGCP), several human and technical resources were mobilised in the city of Libreville, in particular 10 volunteers per neighbourhood for a total of 50 volunteers for the five 5 neighbourhoods of this awareness raising phase.

Concerning the technical results, we shared aproximately seven hundred flyers out of one thousand 1000 flyers produced and impacted more than 250 households.

Qualitative results

The Clean and Green Cities Project (PVPV) began in January 2022 with the first activity on raising awareness among the population on urban household waste management in Libreville neighbourhoods. This first activity was deployed in several neighbourhoods of Libreville, namely Mindoumbé, Rio, Okala Quarry, Nzeng-Ayong and Avéa. The awareness campaign was carried out door-to-door, with the aim of explaining to households the importance of sorting household waste and the mechanisms they can put in place to generate income. After the awareness-raising campaign, target households were evaluated by questionnaires, and it was found that some households were able to adopt responsible behaviour by recovering some household waste.

Financing

The first activity was financed with own funds.
