Food Security Programs and the California Farmer Marketplace

The Office of Farm to Fork, located within the California Department of Food and Agriculture, is committed to helping all Californians access healthy and nutritious California-grown food.

An initiative of CDFA Office of Farm to Fork

Overview of the project

The Office of Farm to Fork (Farm to Fork) brings community members together to address impacts related to California’s drought and rising temperatures, noting that these changes disproportionately impact already underserved communities.

Notably, Farm to Fork facilitated a series of workshops with Central Valley leaders to address food insecurity to create recommendations, including strategies for farmers who want to donate excess product to nearby food banks.

Projects like the Central Valley Food Access Working Group bring community members together to craft solutions for these hard-hitting problems. Farm to Fork also provides trainings and resources to help school officials incorporate seasonal and locally grown foods into their meals. Farm to Fork also provides an online tool, the California Farmer Marketplace, which connects consumers directly with California farmers and ranchers.

Objective

The Office of Farm to Fork, located within the California Department of Food and Agriculture, is committed to helping all Californians access healthy and nutritious California-grown food.

Level of progress

Ongoing research

Quantitative results

In 2017 the Office assumed leadership of the California Farm to School Network, an organization dedicated to increasing student access to food grown within our state and educating them about the production of that food.

The network connects 4,300 stakeholders, including farmers and school districts, across the state with the collective goal of improving the quality of student meals and inspiring lifelong healthy eating habits.

Qualitative results

As 2018 draws near, CDFA’s Office of Farm to Fork (the Office) can look back on all that happened in 2017 and know that there will be an even-stronger commitment to improving all Californians’ access to California-grown foods by working to reduce food insecurity and advancing farm-to-school relationships.
