The results show a reduction of 37 to 53% in air conditioning consumption compared to a standard concrete block wall.

Overview of the project

The TOMA project aims to reduce the use of air conditioning in French Guiana and Mayotte through a building system based on compressed earth blocks (CEB), optimized with locally sourced bio-based materials.
The objective: to reduce energy consumption, particularly that related to transportation and the import of materials (approximately 10%).
Tests and simulations (WUFI® Plus) have shown that the addition of bio-based aggregates significantly improves the hygrothermal performance of walls, enhancing the bioclimatic efficiency of buildings.
Thermal optimization of earthen constructions through the incorporation of bio-based aggregates.

By reducing the need for air conditioning, these solutions lower greenhouse gas emissions while ensuring a minimum level of thermal comfort—even for the most vulnerable populations, who often lack access to air conditioning, particularly in French Guiana, Mayotte, and many African countries.
The use of local resources enables on-site production, reducing imports (whose transport increases the carbon footprint by 10% in Mayotte) and promoting local economic development.
Funded as part of the OMBRE program (led by AQC) and the Energy Savings Certificates (CEE) scheme, the project is supported by a Steering Committee composed of the DGEC and the DHUP — both part of the Ministry for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition — the DGOM from the Ministry of Overseas Territories, ADEME, and EDF SEI, the program’s funder.
