Overview of the project

Project battling deforestation in Guinea, sustainable management of wood reserves and improvement of living conditions. Initiative created in 2009 with the aim to create over 17 000 energy efficient cookers (CHRE) for domestic and professional use. The creation of a quality label will help unify and structure, this activity is mainly led and managed by women from Lower Guinea. By supporting the development of a largely feminine sector of energy-efficient cookers, the COFIFAM project contributes to the sustainable management of natural resources and job creation and promotes Women empowerment in Guinea. By supporting the creation of a sustainable sector of high-efficiency cookers in partnership with a local development NGO and a French association specialized in clean cooking tools, the COFIFAM project encourages the creation of activities and jobs for the small local entrepreneurs. The creation of a brand managed by a structure where women are decision-makers as much as men reinforces the social position and the place of women in entrepreneurship. By supporting the perpetuation and promotion of use of energy-efficient equipment. The COFIFAM project protects users' health as well as the quality of the environment. The project is led by Guinée 44 a French association committed to helping the Republic of Guinea since the 1990's. The association accompanies their partners in project management especially with projects that have results including the improvement of living conditions and independence of local actors. Guinée 44  particularly supports the development of efficient and sustainable economic sectors in sustainable local economic development and encouraging the creation of formal jobs.

Level of progress

Launching

Quantitative results
It's too early to study the current phase of the project because it's about to start.  But it will aso enable:
  • to train a network of 10 boilermakers and welders SMEs
  • to train a network of 60 women to become salespeople and to produce almost 10 000 energy efficient wood cookers
  • marketing and sale of nearly 8700 cookers
  • + 20,000 tons of avoided CO2 emissions
Qualitative results
The project was implemented with a carbon labeling approach with the Gold Standart organization and obtained the label of its approach for the areas around the Kindia and Télimélé prefectures. The project is thus recognized for the social, economic, environmental and cultural qualities that it carries and promotes. The Guinean authorities have recognized the relevance of the project to meet the challenges of reducing CO2 emissions and protecting the wood reserve. The Guinean State, subject to mobilizing the necessary technical and financial means, has set itself the objective of fighting against climate change, support for local production of cooking tools in order to achieve the 2030 goal of one million improved homes.
Financing

Funding is not fully completed yet. Grants were obtained from the French Development Agency, the Albert II Foundation of Monaco, the Pays de la Loire Region. Products from the sale of cooking tools are also funding the project. Lastly, the labeling process and the issuing of carbon credits constitutes a significant funding potential for the project.
