REPower Africa – Clean Energy by the People, for the People

We are part of a powerful global climate movement of one million people campaigning through grassroots campaigns and mass public actions in 188 countries. We are building a movement for climate justice in Africa.

An initiative of 350Africa

Overview of the project

REPower Africa is a pan-African campaign that began with communities in Uganda and Tanzania. This campaign aims to be a solution to the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), where several hundred communities threatened by this project are poised to become a powerful symbol of climate resistance and hope across Africa. Communities along the route of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) are at the forefront of this fight for a better future, powered by renewable energy in the hands of the people. To make this vision a reality, we are working to ensure that African governments end their support for fossil fuels and remove barriers to renewable energy projects, and that the wealthy G7 and G20 countries (such as the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Japan, among others) provide the necessary funding and resources to support this transition.

Objective

REPower Afrika aims to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to decentralised, community-led renewable energy.

Project timeline

Project still ongoing

Quantitative results
  • 650 participants mobilized across 11 activities in Uganda and Tanzania, as well as solidarity actions in Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, DRC, and Benin during the campaign launch.

  • 20 local NGO leaders and stakeholders participated in our workshop in Uganda to discuss the main barriers to renewable energy access and advocacy actions to undertake.

  • Over 1,000 people reached through awareness and educational activities on renewable energy.

  • 200 solar kits distributed in Benin and Togo.

  • 150 improved clean cooking stoves distributed.

Qualitative results
  • Raising awareness/educating more than 1,000 people about renewable energy.
  • Highlighting the main obstacles to accessing renewable energy (flawed regulations, lack of technical capacity and unstable national grid coverage) through our research.
  • Developing community education fact sheets and technical training to develop renewable mini-grids and solar installations.
  • We used public education to demystify complex climate issues. Many people do not fully understand the urgency of the crisis, the meaning of community ownership, the details of energy policy, or the subtleties of a just transition.

We are part of a powerful global climate movement of one million people campaigning through grassroots campaigns and mass public actions in 188 countries. In Africa, we are building a movement for climate justice. We denounce the activities of the fossil fuel industry, which is at the heart of the climate crisis. We support communities demanding that fossil fuels remain in the ground. We advocate for and support governments that choose clean solar and wind energy.
