Decarbonising the shea industry in Togo
The Yokoumi Togo Association promotes the economic empowerment of rural women through the sustainable development of shea butter and energy transition.
Overview of the project
The project ‘Decarbonising the shea butter industry in Togo’ aims to reduce emissions linked to shea butter production and improve working conditions for rural women. Yokoumi Togo has introduced improved stoves that reduce wood consumption by 50% and save significant amounts of energy. In September 2025, the association commissioned a 10 KVA solar community kiosk to provide local access to electricity: charging phones, lamps and small appliances, lighting for children, and support for local economic activities. The next step is to install a 25 KVA gasifier that will convert shea waste into renewable energy, complementing the mini solar power plant to create a 35 KVA hybrid energy platform. This project contributes to reducing production costs, increasing income and giving women greater autonomy.
Decarbonising the shea industry and improving the living conditions of rural women.
Ongoing research
Start: 2024 - End: 2026
- 6 improved stoves installed, 50% reduction in wood consumption
- Access to electricity for women and the Kélizio community via the solar charging kiosk
- 500 women trained and involved in sustainable production
- 1 10 KVA mini solar power plant in operation
- 1 25 KVA gasifier in preparation
Women now work in better conditions, with less hardship and improved health. Their working hours have decreased and their income has increased thanks to lower production costs. They actively participate in energy management and are recognised as agents of climate change. The community benefits from better access to electricity and more sustainable production practices.

organisation
The Yokoumi Togo Association promotes the economic empowerment of rural women through the sustainable development of shea butter and energy transition. It supports more than 500 women producers and collectors in transforming shea butter into organic butter, while integrating clean energy solutions, reducing deforestation and improving working conditions. Yokoumi also works to raise awareness about environmental protection.
