Education project on sustainable development, climate change and eco-citizen actions in schools.
Founded in 2008 in Johannesburg, South Africa, PACJA (Panafrican Climate Justice Alliance) is a consortium of over 1000 organisations in 48 African countries, including Gabon.
Overview of the project
The Education for Sustainable Development, Eco-citizenship and Climate Change Project is an initiative that aims to educate and engage young people in the fight against climate change and environmental protection.
This project consists of several activities, namely
- Activity 1: Introduction to sustainable development, climate change and eco-citizen actions. The aim is to strengthen the capacities of the young people in school on the notion of Sustainable Development, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), eco-citizen actions and climate change.
- Activity 2: Planting fruit trees in the school. In these activities, the young people trained will have the opportunity to plant at least thirty (30) trees in their establishments.
- Activity 3: Creation of a structure called “green club”, in charge of raising awareness of other students and the continuity of activities related to sustainable development and climate change;
- Activity 4: Production and provision of rubbish bins within the school. The young people in the school will participate in the manufacture of the bins made from recycled materials.
- Activity 5: Organisation of a competition of recycled objects by the student.
To raise awareness among schoolchildren about sustainable development, the effects of climate change and eco-citizenship in order to encourage them to take action to protect the environment.
Ongoing research

During the first activity, which is the workshop of initiation to sustainable development, climate change and eco-citizen gestures, two hundred (200) students including thirty (30) students in the final year of secondary school, twenty (20) in the first year, twenty (20) in the second year, twenty (20) in the third year, thirty (30) in the fourth year, thirty (30) in the fifth year and fifty (50) in the sixth year.
Also, during the workshop five (05) members of the administration and five (05) members of the teaching staff of the school strengthened their capacities.
The first activity, an introductory workshop on sustainable development, climate change and eco-citizenship, began in December 2021. At the beginning of the workshop, evaluation sheets were distributed to gauge their level of knowledge on Sustainable Development, eco-citizen actions and climate change. At the end of the workshop, the level of knowledge acquired by the young learners was assessed by means of an evaluation sheet.
At the end of the workshop, the students’ capacities were strengthened and they were able to grasp the notions of Sustainable Development, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), eco-citizen actions and climate change.
This project was implemented with the support of the French Development Agency (AFD).
