N’djra-aï-tché-do: I Commit to Climate Resilience in Aguégués

Founded on April 2, 2015, the Benin Network of the World Youth Parliament for Water (RB/PMJE) is one of the national chapters of the World Youth Parliament for Water (PMJE), a global network of young actors committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

An initiative of Benin Network of the World Youth Parliament for Water (RB/PMJE)

Overview of the project

The “N’djra-aï-tché-do” project, which means “I Commit” in the local Wémè language, is an initiative led by the Benin Network of the World Youth Parliament for Water (RB/PMJE). This project aims to strengthen climate resilience and the sustainable management of water resources in the commune of Aguégués, a lacustrine area particularly vulnerable to flooding, erosion, and the impacts of climate change.

Implemented over a fifteen-month period (September 2024 – December 2025), the project is built around three pillars: training, community reforestation, and participatory local action. It plans to train and raise awareness among 40 local actors (youth, women, local authorities, and members of the Local Water Committee) on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), climate change, and project management.
In the field, the project has enabled the planting of 1,444 acacia seedlings, with the participation of five zonal committees. A local protocol for seedling management and monitoring was developed participatively, accompanied by a community competition rewarding the three best-performing committees for their commitment to monitoring and maintaining the seedlings. The winning committees receive technical and financial support to implement three local climate micro-actions as part of a Local Lead Adaptation promotion strategy.
By combining environmental education, community engagement, and nature-based solutions, N’djra-aï-tché-do promotes the ecological and social sustainability of territories exposed to climate risks in the commune of Aguégués.

Objective

Strengthen sustainable water resource management and climate resilience in Aguégués communities through training, afforestation, and community engagement.

Level of progress

Ongoing research

Project timeline

1 September 2024 – 31 December 2025 (project still ongoing)

Quantitative results
  • 40 local actors trained on IWRM, climate, and project management

  • 1,444 acacia seedlings planted across five target zones

  • 2 Local Water Committees (LWCs) and 5 zonal committees engaged in environmental governance

  • 1 participatory local protocol for seedling monitoring and management developed and implemented

  • 3 climate micro-actions carried out by the winning committees of the “N’djra-aï-tché-do” community challenge

Qualitative results

The project has strengthened local understanding of IWRM and climate change issues, while fostering the emergence of a community-driven dynamic around ecosystem restoration. The trained local actors now actively participate in protecting the planted seedlings and in local actions. The spirit of collaboration between youth, women, and local authorities has been reinforced, contributing to a more inclusive and resilient local governance.

Financing

The project was partially funded by the Benin Network of the World Youth Parliament for Water (RB/PMJE), with support from Join For Water, GIZ, and Klima Delegation.
