Palmarin Ecosystem Restoration Project

The planned oil and gas exploitation in the area and the environmental consequences linked to this activity will have a strong impact on the ecosystems of the commune of Palmarin. The NGO AMES is supporting the local community of Palmarin to help build the resilience of its people.

An initiative of Alliance des Acteurs et Métiers des Energies au Sénégal (AMES)

Overview of the project

The Palmarin ecosystem restoration project is an initiative launched by the NGO AMES as part of its partnership with the Palmarin town hall. onvinced that the degradation of the environment is a real threat to future generations, the NGO Alliance des Acteurs et Métiers des Energies au Sénégal (AMES), in partnership with the Palmarin Town Hall, wishes to intervene through this project in the restoration of some of Palmarin’s ecosystems in order to preserve its resources.

It is a project that comes at the right time, especially since it will eventually allow :

  • the installation of an anti-salt dyke along the sea arm at Palmarin Ngounoumane in order to slow down the advance of salinisation of the soil towards the forests,
  • reforestation of endemic species threatened with extinction and
  • raising the awareness of the population on the preservation of biodiversity as well as on issues related to the exploitation of hydrocarbons.

With oil and gas exploitation planned in the area, the environmental consequences linked to this activity will have a strong impact on the ecosystems of the commune of Palmarin. It is with this in mind that the NGO AMES, as part of its missions, is supporting the local community of Palmarin to help it strengthen the resilience of its populations. The project will contribute efficiently to the fight against global warming through the role played by reforested plants in the absorption of carbon dioxide through photosynthesis. In addition, at the local level, the project will contribute to the creation of jobs, which is an effective way of combating rural exodus and illegal emigration. In terms of training, the project will provide an effective framework for capacity building.

Objective

The main objective of the project is to participate in the protection of natural ecosystems in Palmarin by avoiding the total disappearance of endemic species and the advancement of soil salinisation and to inform the population about the stakes of hydrocarbon exploitation in Senegal, in this case in the Djifer area.

Quantitative results

The quantitative results achieved are as follows:

  • Result 1: 3,000 plants reforested in the Bouba forest;
  • Result 2: 5,000 plants reforested in the coastal area of Palmarin Ngallou;
  • Result 3: Endemic plant species threatened with extinction reintroduced;
  • Result 4: Bouba forest protected from salinisation
  • Result 5: The population informed and sensitised on the issues of the exploitation of the Sangomar field located off Djifer.
Qualitative results

The project will have a strong impact on the environment of Palmarin, which is currently facing important climatic constraints. Indeed, the reforestation on the coast will considerably reduce coastal erosion and the advance of the sea. The reforestation of the forest will also protect the forest against soil salinisation, which will allow the recovery of fertile soil for agriculture. Finally, all of these results together allow for a significant improvement in the living environment of the population.

Financing

The project was financed partly with own funds but also with contributions from donors.
