Taking action for nature conservation

BEES-NGO works to protect and sustainably manage biodiversity in Benin, while promoting ecotourism and raising awareness among communities about environmental education and sustainable development.

An initiative of BENIN ENVIRONMENT AND EDUCATION SOCIETY (BEES-ONG)

Overview of the project

The initiative “Acting for Nature Conservation: Educating and Inspiring Future Eco-Citizens in Africa” is an ambitious educational project led by BEES ONG, in partnership with Play For Nature and Youth Conservation/IUCN PAPACO. It aims to raise awareness among and train young Africans, particularly in Benin, on environmental preservation through concrete, participatory actions.

The project pursues several key objectives: to foster ecological awareness among primary and secondary school students by providing practical knowledge on nature conservation; to encourage their engagement in environmental initiatives such as reforestation, waste management, and the protection of local ecosystems; and to strengthen the capacities of young leaders capable of promoting and spreading these best practices within their communities.

Implemented in the municipalities of Kétou, Porto-Novo, and Sô-Ava, the first phase reached schools including CEG 3 Kétou, Ewè, Adakplamé, and Kpafè Public Primary School, through awareness sessions, hands-on workshops, and educational outings that directly involved students in concrete conservation actions.

Supported by local and international partners, the project benefits from the Youth Conservation network for coordination and monitoring, ensuring a collaborative and sustainable approach.

Building on the success of the first edition, marked by active participation and growing interest in environmental issues, BEES ONG has launched Phase 2, aiming to expand the program to more schools and municipalities, while deepening participatory activities and the development of youth-led local projects.

Quantitative results

More than 1,200 primary and secondary school pupils from the municipalities of Kétou and Sô-Ava took part in awareness-raising sessions and practical workshops. Four (04) schools were directly involved, including CEG 3 Kétou, Ewè, Adakplamé and Kpafè Public Primary School. Four environmental clubs were set up, each comprising at least 50 pupils.
Concrete actions carried out: Three school nurseries were set up. More than 1,000 trees were planted during reforestation sessions. Pupils were made aware of plastic waste management and the preservation of local ecosystems and biodiversity.

Qualitative results

The pupils and young participants developed a better understanding of issues related to biodiversity, waste management and the preservation of local ecosystems. Their environmental awareness has been significantly strengthened. Many pupils initiated or participated in local actions, such as reforestation, cleaning school grounds and protecting natural areas. They now show a proactive attitude towards environmental issues. Young community leaders have emerged, capable of passing on good environmental practices to their peers and families, and leading awareness-raising activities in their communities.

Financing

The project is implemented with the support of Play For Nature and Youth Conservation/IUCN PAPACO.
