Technical and economic study of low-tech industrial sectors in the Western Mediterranean
Amerma carries out studies, experiments and implements new local and sustainable industrial approaches, in order to produce goods that are essential to the region and to its ecological and social transition.

Overview of the project
As part of a study for ADEME, we are analysing low-tech industrial projects in the western Mediterranean (Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Malta, Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, France and Spain). After outlining the main industrial challenges facing the region, we show how certain low-tech initiatives are responding to them in a systemic way from an economic, social and environmental point of view. Six case studies provide concrete illustrations of the viability of these approaches. The aim is to strengthen synergies between regions, share best practice and encourage cooperation around sustainable initiatives.
The aim of this technical and economic study of low-tech industrial sectors in the Western Mediterranean is to identify and analyse industrial projects that have already adopted a low-tech approach, in order to demonstrate and share the economic, environmental and social benefits of these approaches to production.
Ongoing research
17/09/2024 - 17/09/2025
We have identified more than 130 low-tech industry projects in six sectors: sustainable construction, textiles, mobility, food, renewable energies and industrial resilience (eco-design, reuse, retrofitting, etc.). These initiatives address four key issues: energy transition, circular economy, water management and regional industrial integration. Detailed technical and economic results for six selected case studies will be published shortly.
In each country studied, we have identified low-tech industrial initiatives that are bringing about major transformations: they are strengthening territorial resilience (waste management, water, energy, industrial integration) and proposing responsible economic models focused on essential needs and respect for planetary limits. Although still emerging, these initiatives have great potential for replication in a Mediterranean context where environmental issues are common.
This project is fully funded by ADEME.
organisation
Amerma carries out studies, experiments and implements new local and sustainable industrial approaches, in order to produce goods that are essential to the region and to its ecological and social transition, in a responsible way. Amerma carries out 3 types of activity: studies, enabling these approaches and their economic, environmental and social benefits to be theorised and explained; advice to manufacturing companies on reducing their environmental footprint; development of industrial cooperatives for sectors of interest in a regional ecological and social transition, bringing together players in the same sector to pool industrial land, technical and logistical equipment and all the support functions required for the activity.
