TyCCAO – Typha Fuel and Construction in West Africa
BioBuild Concept supports the development of sustainable construction projects. Its expertise includes the development of bio-sourced materials, eco-design of buildings and the circular economy.

Overview of the project

Typha, an invasive reed in the Senegal River basin, affects health, access to water, agriculture and biodiversity. The TyCCAO project, already referenced in the Climate Chance map (Senegal and Mauritania), aims to develop this abundant plant as a resource for biofuels and biosourced construction materials, thereby contributing to the ecological transition.
Coordinated by more than 20 partners in Senegal, Mauritania and France, the programme focused on four areas:
Develop typha, an invasive plant, into biofuel and sustainable building materials.
Ongoing research
01/06/2018 au 31/12/2024
More than 20 organisations were involved in the programme. More than 150 people have been trained in typha development techniques. A dozen buildings have been constructed with the support of TyCCAO. The programme was represented at FIBRA Innovation 2019 and MICDA-AO 2024 in Dakar.
The TyCCAO programme has revealed the potential of typha as a resource, laying the foundations for a sustainable construction industry in hot zones. It has promoted local bio-sourced materials and advocated their role in the face of climate challenges and growing needs in Africa.
The project was funded by several donors (FGEF, ADEME, MTE) and by contributions from various partners.
