Youth Climate Ambassadors Programme
EduSmart Africa is an African association committed to sustainable development through education, digital technology, the environment, tourism and leisure. It supports young people and local communities in implementing innovative projects aligned with the SDGs.
Overview of the project
An initiative that originated in French Guiana, the Young Climate Ambassadors (YCA) programme is a pan-African and Caribbean movement that aims to train, equip and mobilise young people around issues related to climate change and sustainable development. Supported in Benin by EduSmart Africa, this programme is part of a drive to educate people about climate citizenship and local action in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In Sèmè-Podji, the programme aims to create a generation of young change-makers who are able to understand environmental challenges, take local action and innovate for the benefit of their community. Through training workshops, community projects and partnerships with local authorities, the JACs of Sèmè-Podji are working to strengthen climate resilience, promote renewable energies, sustainable resource management and environmental awareness. By bringing together young people, local institutions and educational stakeholders, the JAC programme is turning Sèmè-Podji into a living laboratory for ecological, social and civic transition, working towards a sustainable future for all.
The Young Climate Ambassadors programme in Sèmè-Podji aims to train and mobilise young people around local climate adaptation and resilience actions in collaboration with the municipality for a sustainable and inclusive region.
Ongoing research
12/06/2025 - 12/06/2030
In quantitative terms, several concrete advances have been made since the programme was launched:
• 1 commitment charter signed formalising the membership of JAC Sèmè-Podji in the Young Climate Ambassadors network;
• 17 young people selected and recruited as the first cohort of Climate Ambassadors representing several neighbourhoods and villages in the municipality;
• Three discussion and group work sessions organised to introduce the programme, strengthen group cohesion and plan the next stages of training;
• One local partnership established with NGOs (JPEDD) to support young people and implement activities.
Although the programme is still in its early stages in Sèmè-Podji, the initial qualitative results are very positive. Since the signing of the commitment charter in September and the recruitment of the first cohort of 17 Young Climate Ambassadors, we have already held several participatory discussions aimed at strengthening understanding of climate issues and consolidating group cohesion. These meetings have laid the foundations for a dynamic network of motivated, committed young people who are aware of their role in the local ecological transition. Future training workshops will build on this initial phase of exchanges to deepen their skills and structure their future actions in the field.
At the moment, we do not yet have funding.
